A metaphorical licking of the lips

September 3, 2009

Pimpernel has been salivating over this amazing waistcoat over on the FIDM Museum blog. (Although dribbling down the front of one’s waistcoat isn’t desirable or to be recommended.)

This waistcoat is part of a three piece suit donated to the museum by the wife of the great-great-great grandson of Austrian composer and pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837). Apparently this waistcoat belonged to Hummel, dates from around 1811-1815 and is in near pristine condition, though the Museum doesn’t know when or where it was worn.

This waistcoat makes an outfit with a jacket and breeches of aubergine silk velvet. Pimpernel is licking his lips (metaphorically) at the delicious thought of aubergine silk velvet. FIDM has promised to post more pictures and more info when they have it. We can’t wait!
